This week in math we are learning how to convert metric and customary measurements.
The sentence that we use to help us remember the order of the metric prefixes is: King Henry Died by drinking chocolate milk. The beginning letters stand for Kilo, Hecto, Deca, base (meter, gram, liter, etc), deci, centi, millli.
The students are also using this staircase visual to help understand the places of the metric system prefixes:

An example of what this looks like is: If I have 5.3 cm and I want to know how many meters it is equal to than I move the decimal two places to the left because meter (the base unit) is two places to the left of a centimeter. So, 5.3 cm= 0.053 m.
We are going to be working on metric measurement as well as customary measurement this week. If you need an extra activity for your child to do, have them measure items around the house for practice.
